520 _aTraditionally, for many coastal populations of Sri Lanka, coral reefs provided food, building materials for houses, sheltered harbours for boats and areas for safe bathing and recreation. For generations these reefs were able to provide for the needs of small communities that were dependant on them. But, today, in addition to providing for the needs of over-populated communities that had used coral reefs traditionally, reef resources are exploited for several other purposes including to cater for a very lucrative tourist industry.
