Age Determination and Growth of Oreochromis Mossambicus (Peters) from a Sri Lanka Lake

By: Contributor(s): Publication details: NARA, Colombo,Description: 1-22pSummary: Age and growth of the mouthbrooding fish Oreochromis mossambicus (PETERS) from Colombo , (=Beir&) Lake in Sri Lanka were determined by using otolith daily growth increments. Specimens measuring 2.6 to 15.6cm were aged between 35 and 263 days, and the duration of the larval stage based on the number of daily rings in the nuclear zone of the otolith was estimated to be 8 to 25 (mean = 14) days. The monthly growth of 0. mossambicus in Colombo Lake was of the form L = 29.5 {1 - exp [- 0.083 (t + 0.013)]} cm TL. A comparison of the growth parameters of this and other 0. mossambicus populations indicates that the Colombo Lake fish has a faster growth rate and a smaller asymptotic length.
