Although scientists have painstakingly worked out guidelines for rationally managing coral reefs, there is very little concrete evidence based on socio-economic considerations to convince governments of the short-sightedness of allowing the destruction of their coral reefs for short term gain. It is suggested, that scientists look for evidence to convince policy makers, administrators as well as users and abusers of coral reefs of the socio-economic value of this ecosystem, in addition to its scientific value.
