Age Determination and Growth of Oreochromis Mossambicus (Peters) from a Sri Lanka Lake

<br/><br/> Age and growth of the mouthbrooding fish Oreochromis mossambicus <br/>(PETERS) from Colombo , (=Beir&) Lake in Sri Lanka were determined by <br/>using otolith daily growth increments. Specimens measuring 2.6 to <br/>15.6cm were aged between 35 and 263 days, and the duration of the <br/>larval stage based on the number of daily rings in the nuclear zone <br/>of the otolith was estimated to be 8 to 25 (mean = 14) days. The <br/>monthly growth of 0. mossambicus in Colombo Lake was of the form <br/>L = 29.5  cm TL.<br/>A comparison of the growth parameters of this and other 0. mossambicus <br/>populations indicates that the Colombo Lake fish has a faster growth <br/>rate and a smaller asymptotic length.
