Growth Observations Thhrough Restocking of penaeus monodon (Crustacea: Penaeidae) in Rekawa Lagoon

By: Jayakody, D.S.
Publisher: Sri Lanka, NARA, 2006Description: 1p.
Contents:
Rekawa lagoon (240 ha) in southern Sri Lanka supports a small scale shrimp fishery. 400000 post larvae of Penaeus monodon were stocked in Rekawa lagoon in June 2004. Average individual weight of 48 grams was reached after 13 weeks. Highest weight increment was observed during 7 to 10 week period after stocking. A survival rate of 8.7% was reached at the end of the culture period. A total production of 1256 kg was obtained (226 kg of <30 gm size; 710 kg of 30-50 gm size and 320 kg of >50 gm size) af the time of harvesting. Twelve stations were sampled for salinity measurements and the average salinity values ranged from 6 to 10 ppt during the culture period.
