Prawn catch statistics collected during 1978 - 1986 shows a gradual decline of the catch per unit effort (CPUE). The CPUE of 7 • 1 kg. per Oru per day at 1978 hafl dropped to a value of 4.4 kg. per Oru per day in 1986. CPUE and effort data shows a learnear relationship and fits to the schaefer model. CPUE vs effort plot shows a MSY value of 152646 kg. per annum. The fishing effort of 24573 boat days at 1986, was well above the optimum level. The yield - effort curve shows that the present exploitation level is at the descending part of the curve, indicating the signs of overfishing.
