| Formatted contents note | Each year, during the latter part of the south-west monsoon (during August / September), fishermen of the south and south-west coasts using surrounding nets get <br/>exceptionally high catches in their nets. As surrounding nets are efficient when <br/>compared to other fishing methods used in the area, conflicts have arisen-, amongst fishermen using different gears to target the same resource. For example, in August 1996, a conflict arose between drift gillnet and surrounding net fishermen. On the <br/>request of the Chairman, NARA, the Fishing Technology Division conducted two surveys; one during August / Sept. 1996 and the other from Sept. - Dec. 1996, to identify the nature of this issue and to make recommendations to the MFARD on ways and means of resolving this conflict.<br/> |
