| Summary, etc. | Traditionally, for many coastal populations of Sri Lanka, <br/>coral reefs provided food, building materials for houses, <br/>sheltered harbours for boats and areas for safe bathing and <br/>recreation. For generations these reefs were able to provide for <br/>the needs of small communities that were dependant on them. But, <br/>today, in addition to providing for the needs of over-populated <br/>communities that had used coral reefs traditionally, reef <br/>resources are exploited for several other purposes including to <br/>cater for a very lucrative tourist industry.<br/> |
