520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. Although much has been written on the splendor of the Sri Lankan coral reefs in popular literature, very little actual scientific investigations have been carried out on them. De Silva (1985) has summarized the scientific work done on Sri Lankan corals and coral reefs. Pillai (1972) reported a total of 90 species divided among 39 genera of stony corals from Sri Lanka of which 27 genera and 70 species were herrnatypic. More recently Scheer (1984) records 40 herrnatypic coral genera based on previous records as well as on his own collections. However, as he has included several coral genera which are at present regarded as being synonymous, his total can actually be reduced to 34 genera. Based on previous records updated to eliminate synonymous genera and species, and investigations carried out by the Coral Reef Research Team of the National Aquatic Resources Agency (NARA), 131 species of stony corals divided among 55 genera are recorded for Sri Lanka. Ecological notes are provided for 25 species including 5 genera which are new records for Sri Lanka.
